Major Topics in AP Physics C: Mechanics

There are seven major topics in AP Physics C: Mechanics. They are Kinematics, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Work, Energy, and Power, Momentum, Rotational Motion and Dynamics, Gravitation and finally Oscillations and Simple Harmonic Motion.

Let’s go in-depth on the major topics of AP Physics C: Mechanics:

1. Kinematics:

Kinematics is the study of the motion of points, bodies / objects and systems without considering the force that cause them to move. It includes the concepts such as velocity, acceleration, and displacement in one and two dimensions.

$$🔹 v=v_0+a t$$

$$🔹 x=x_0+v_0 t+\frac{1}{2} a t^2$$

$$🔹 v^2=v_0^2+2 a\left(x-x_0\right)$$

$$🔹 a=\frac{d v}{d t}, v=\frac{d x}{d t}$$

2. Newton’s Laws of Motion:

Newton’s Laws of Motion is defined as the fundamental principles which explains the relation between force and motion. It also provides the foundation for understanding dynamics and interactions between objects.

$$Second Law: \sum \vec{F}=m \vec{a}$$

$$Friction: f_s \leq \mu_s N, f_k=\mu_k N$$

3. Work, Energy, and Power:

In this topic students learn about how forces perform work, the transfer and conservation of energy, and the rate at which energy is used.

$$Work: W=\int \vec{F} \cdot d \vec{s}, W=F d \cos \theta$$

$$Kinetic Energy: K E=\frac{1}{2} m v^2$$

$$Work-Energy Theorem: W=\Delta K E$$

$$Potential Energy (Gravitational): U_g=m g h$$

$$Potential Energy (Spring): U_s=\frac{1}{2} k x^2$$

$$Conservation Of Energy: E_{\text {total }}=K E+P E$$

$$Power: P=\frac{d W}{d t}=\vec{F} \cdot \vec{v}$$

4. Momentum:

The topic momentum is the study of motion in terms of momentum and impulses. It works with the application in collisions and conservation laws.

$$Linear Momentum: \vec{p}=m \vec{v}$$

$$Impulse: \vec{J}=\Delta \vec{p}=\int \vec{F} d t$$

$$Conservation Of Momentum: \sum \vec{p}_i=\sum \vec{p}_f$$

5. Rotational Motion:

In simple words rotational motion can be explained as the motion of an object around the circular path or a central line in a fixed orbit. The orbit might be clockwise or anticlockwise.

Angular Kinematics

$$🔹 \omega=\omega_0+\alpha t$$

$$🔹\theta=\theta_0+\omega_0 t+\frac{1}{2} \alpha t^2$$

$$🔹\omega^2=\omega_0^2+2 \alpha\left(\theta-\theta_0\right)$$

Rotational Inertia (Moment of Inertia)

$$🔹I=\sum m_i r_i^2$$

$$Torque: \tau=r F \sin \theta=I \alpha$$

$$Rotational Kinetic Energy: K E_{\mathrm{rot}}=\frac{1}{2} I \omega^2$$

$$Angular Momentum: \vec{L}=I \vec{\omega}, \tau=\frac{d \vec{L}}{d t}$$

6. Gravitation:

In this topic students learn about Newton’s law of gravitation, orbital mechanics, and potential energy of objects under gravitational force influence.

$$Newton’s Law Of Gravitation: F=G \frac{m_1 m_2}{r^2}$$

$$Gravitational Potential Energy: U=-G \frac{m_1 m_2}{r}$$

$$Orbital Velocity: v=\sqrt{\frac{G M}{r}}$$

$$Period Of Orbit: T^2=\frac{4 \pi^2 r^3}{G M}$$

7. Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM):

In this topics students will learn about the Oscillatory system that include pendulums, springs, periodic motion, restoring forces and energy conversions.

$$Period Of Spring: T=2 \pi \sqrt{\frac{m}{k}}$$

$$Period Of Pendulum: T=2 \pi \sqrt{\frac{L}{g}}$$

The AP Physics C Mechanics equation sheet is consist of essential equations and constants that is related to exam topics. The equation sheet is very essential for students because it reduces memorization. Simply students don’t need to memorize complex and very long equations, so that they can utilize time to focus on understanding concepts and problem-solving strategies.
