We are quickly approaching the time of year when high school students choose their classes for the next academic year. A common question is whether to register for more rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
Successfully completing AP classes has benefits for both the college application process and college itself. Many students grapple with whether to boost their GPA by taking easier classes or take the challenge of an AP course.
If your teachers agree that you’re ready for the rigor of an AP course, we believe the answer is clear. Here are some reasons why challenging yourself is always the better choice:
Should I Take AP Courses?
- Your academic record is the most important part of your college application portfolio. Admissions departments are impressed by students who take the most challenging courses available to them. Success in rigorous classes is a strong indicator of college readiness, and AP courses, which are college-level, garner the most respect.
- AP classes develop the high-level skills you’ll need in college. Writing essays, solving complex problems, and applying critical thinking in AP courses better prepare students for the transition to college, where independent thinking and advanced analysis are key.
- Earning AP credits in high school creates more room in your freshman schedule for electives. This flexibility allows students to explore their intended major more deeply and can make the first year of college more enjoyable by opening up time for exploratory courses.
- AP credits can make it easier to pursue additional academic goals, like a minor or even a second major. Without AP credits, students may find it difficult to complete the requirements for two majors within four years.
However, it’s important to remember that not all students can or should take AP courses in every subject. Often, students find certain AP courses that align with their strengths and interests. For example, a student strong in science might excel in AP Biology but may not find AP U.S. History as beneficial.
AP credits give students a head start on a more diverse and fulfilling college experience.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Students should challenge themselves while being mindful of their strengths and making thoughtful class choices to protect their academic records.
